What is Prept?

Prept is an online marketplace and video platform that connects job seekers with industry professionals for one-on-one online video conference mock interviews and informational interviews. Job seekers use Prept to find industry insiders who can either help them prepare for upcoming job interviews or who can give them insights into landing a job in their field. Prept is the only service that enables job seekers to connect live and online with real industry professionals to participate in mock video interviews.

How does Prept work?

Job seekers search our interviewer directory and request mock or informational interviews with the industry professionals of their choice. Our interviewers manage their own schedules and can accept, reschedule, or deny any interview requests they receive. After an interview is confirmed, both the job seeker and the interviewer join a one-on-one video conference session on the Prept platform. Job seekers pay for each completed session.

For a mock interview, the interviewer asks the job seekers real interview questions to help them get prepared. After approximately 25 minutes, the interviewer provides feedback to the job seeker to help them improve their interview performance.

For an informational interview, the job seeker asks the questions. The industry professional provides information about what it's like to work in their field, the landscape and opportunities in their industry, and tips for landing a job with their employer.

What technology do I need to participate in a Prept interview?

To participate in a Prept interview, you will need a computer with a good, reliable internet connection, a web camera, and microphone. Currently, Prept interview sessions only work on Chrome and Firefox. You can browse the site, update your profile, and request interviews using any browser, but you will need to use either Chrome or Firefox to actually participate in an interview. Please note that Prept does not currently work on tablets or smartphones.

To reduce background noise and echoes, we strongly recommend the use of a headset or headphones/ear buds.

What browsers do you support?

For interview sessions, Prept currently works on only Chrome and Firefox. Please make sure you are using the latest version of one of these browsers.

How much does Prept cost?

Our interviewers set their own rates, so the cost of the interview will vary depending on who you select as your interviewer. You can see the rate for an interviewer by looking at their full profile. For a 30-minute session, the average cost is currently between $20 and $50.

Who are the interviewers?

Our interviewers are industry professionals who have prior experience conducting interviews for their current or former employers. Some of our interviewers are hiring managers while others are HR managers or recruiters. To learn more about the interviewers, view their full profiles to read their bios and see their work experience and educational backgrounds.

How do I find an interviewer?

To find an interviewer, visit our Search page. Browse our interviewer directory and pick an interviewer who is relevant for the industry and job you are seeking.

Who is the best interviewer for me?

Use our Search page to find relevant interviewers for you. When picking an interviewer, we recommend finding someone who has interviewing experience in the industry and job function that you are seeking. You may be able to find interviewers who work or have worked at the specific employer where you are going to interview.

Check the work experience and bios for interviewers that you're considering. If your potential interviewers have conducted previous interviews on Prept, check out their ratings and reviews for insights on their interviewing style.

How do I schedule an interview?

After you have found your chosen interviewer, click on the Request an Interview button. If you do not already have a Prept account, you will need to create an account before scheduling an interview. To create an account, click here.

In your interview request, please provide some details on the type of job or position that you are seeking. This will help your interviewer prepare for your session. As part of your request, you will be asked to provide three potential interview times. Most interviewers have provided their preferred times for your guidance. You can certainly request a time outside of an interviewer's preferred times, but they are most likely to be available during their preferred times.

Before finalizing your interview request, you will be asked to enter your credit card payment information. You will not be charged until the interview has been conducted, but we must verify and pre-authorize your card when you request the interview.

After you have entered and confirmed your interview request, and we will notify your interviewer. Your interview is not confirmed until your interviewer has confirmed the specific date and time for an interview. All of our interviewers manage their own requests and schedules. Once your interview has been confirmed, we will notify you via e-mail. You can also see your confirmed interviews in the Scheduled tab of your Dashboard.

How do I cancel or modify a scheduled interview?

To cancel or modify a scheduled interview, visit your Dashboard. Click on the interview you would like to change, and then click the Reschedule Interview or Cancel Interview button and follow the instructions.

I want to stay confidential. How can I do that?

For all of our interviewers and job seekers, we only show first names and the first initial of the last name. If you participate in an interview, your Interviewer will see you, but they won't receive your full name or contact information unless you provide it to them. As a job seeker, you can upload your resume. If you want to stay confidential, don't include your full name or contact details in your resume.

How do I join an interview?

To join an interview, visit your Dashboard. Find the interview in the Scheduled tab in your Dashboard, and click on the name of your interviewer. Then click the Join Interview button and follow the instructions. We recommend that you join the interview 5-10 minutes early, just to make sure your camera and microphone are working correctly.

How should I dress for a mock or informational interview?

Please dress in business or business casual attire to make the mock interview as real as possible.

Can I become an interviewer?

If you have prior interviewing experience and would be a good interview coach, then we'd love to have you join our network of interviewers! To register as an interviewer, click here.

In general, you should have at least 5 years of work experience in your industry. Our best interviewers have conducted many job interviews in the past for their previous or current employers. At a minimum, you should have conducted at least 5 interviews in the past.

To ensure that our interviewers are qualified and experienced, we review each interviewer profile before it is published. Make sure your profile is as complete as possible. This will help us determine if you're qualified to be an interviewer on Prept, and it will help job seekers find you.

Why am I required to register using my LinkedIn account?

We use LinkedIn to verify your professional experience. We also pull parts of your profile from LinkedIn, which also makes it much easier and faster for you to create a profile. At this time, all inteviewers must have a LinkedIn account to register for Prept.

How do I get paid?

If you have set a rate, you will be paid for interviews that you successfully conduct. We transfer payments to our interviewers once a month. Payments are initiated on the 7th of the month for interviews conducted in the previous month. If the 7th falls on a weekend or holiday, payments are initiated the next business day. After we initiate payment, it may take several days for your payments to be reflected in your account.

We currently make all payments to interviewers via PayPal. We do not collect your payment information until you have confirmed your first scheduled interview. At that time, you will receive a message from us with instructions to provide us with the e-mail address associated with your PayPal account. If you do not have a PayPal account when you receive this message, you can create a free account at https://www.paypal.com.

How can I get more interviews?

To get more interviews, spread the word that you are an available interviewer on Prept. Tell your friends and family and post your availability on your social media networks. We also encourage you to add your Prept profile page link to your social media networks, including LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter.

How much should I charge?

Currently, you can set your rate to whatever you choose. If you're feeling generous with your time, you don't need to charge anything (just set your rate to $0). Most of our interviewers have set their rates for a 30-minute session somewhere between $20 and $50.

Please note that you must enter a rate during the registration process in order to be approved as an interviewer.

The price on my profile page is higher than the rate I set. Why?

When you successfully conduct an interview, you get paid the full rate that you have set in your account preferences. We add a Prept service fee on top of your rate. Our service fee varies, depending on your rate. The price you see on your profile page (and the price a job seeker pays) is the combination of your rate and our service fee.

How do I confirm interviews?

When a job seeker requests an interview with you, we will notify you by e-mail. Please be sure that the e-mail address that you use for your Prept account is an address that you check regularly.

After you have received a request, log into your account and visit your Dashboard. Find the interview in the Scheduled tab in your Dashboard, and click on the name of the job seeker. From there, just follow the instructions to confirm, reschedule, or deny the request. Then click the Join Interview button and follow the instructions.

How do I join an interview?

To join an interview, visit your Dashboard. Find the interview in the Scheduled tab in your Dashboard, and click on the name of the job seeker. Then click the Join Interview button and follow the instructions. We recommend that you join the interview 5-10 minutes early, just to make sure your camera and microphone are working correctly.

Once you and the job seeker have both joined the session, you will see a Start Session button. When you click this button, your video and audio feeds will be connected, and the session timer will start.

As an interviewer, can I request interviews with other interviewers?

Absolutely. All interviews can also request and schedule mock or informational interviews with other interviewers on Prept.

How should I divide the time in a mock interview?

For most 30-minute mock interviews, we recommend that you spend approximately 20-25 minutes asking interview questions and then spend 5-10 minutes providing feedback. This format works well because it replicates the pressure of an interview scenario in which the job seeker has to think on his or her feet for multiple, different questions in a row.

The 30-minute timer starts as soon as you click the Start Session button. At the end of the session, we provide a 5-minute grace period before the session terminates. Make sure you watch the time!

Here's a typical schedule that you can follow.

  • Introductions: 1-2 minutes. Meet one another and set the context. Understand what potential job interview the job seeker wants to practice.
  • Mock interview: 20-25 minutes. During the mock interview, you should focus on interviewing the job seeker for a potential job that they may be seeking. Ask industry and role specific questions based on your experiences.
  • Feedback: 5-10 minutes. Discuss what the job seeker did well and where they may be able to improve their performance. Provide tips for interviewing based on your experiences, and answer any questions they may have for you.

How should I prepare for a mock interview?

Your job seeker requested an interview with you because of your unique professional background and experience. Job seekers need your help, and little preparation goes a long way.

Before the interview, review your job seeker's profile, resume, and the type of job he or she is seeking (if they have entered it). We recommend preparing approximately 10-15 sample questions that you can ask during the mock interview. These should be questions based on your experiences, but you should tailor them for the job seeker and any specific potential roles that he or she is seeking.

Immediately before you join the interview session, you will see a text box where you can enter your questions. This will allow you to keep them handy during the interview. In the actual interview session, you will also be able to take notes in this same text box, which will help you provide feedback at the end of the session.

How should I dress for a mock or informational interview?

I hear an echo of my own voice. How can I fix that?

If you hear an echo, it's usually because the other person in your session is not using a headset or headphones. Your voice is playing over their speakers and being picked up by their microphone. The easiest way to solve this is to ask them to use headphones or ear buds instead of their speakers.

The other person can't see or hear me. What do I do?

There may be several causes of this issue:

  1. You may have not enabled your web camera and microphone. When you join a Prept interview session for the first time, you will receive a prompt at the top of your browser window that asks if you want to allow your web camera or microphone. If you do not enable your web camera, your interview screen will appear black with a loading image like the following screen shot.

    Chrome: The prompt appears under the address bar and looks like the following screenshot. If you do not see this prompt, refresh your browser tab. Click the "Allow" button, and that will enable your camera and microphone.

    Once your web camera is enabled in Chrome, you will see a red dot in your browser tab and a camera in your address bar that looks like the following screenshot.

    If you accidentally denied the request, look in the far right of your address. Click the camera icon, which will have an "X" on it. Click on the camera, select "Ask if www.prept.co wants to access your camera and microphone," and click Done.

    You will then see a prompt to reload your page. Click "Reload." When the page finished reloading click the "Allow" button.

    Firefox: The prompt pops down from the address bar and looks like the following screenshot. If you do not see this prompt, refresh your browser tab. Make sure that a camera and microphone are selected, and then click "Share Selected Devices."

    Once your web camera is enabled in Firefox, you will see a green camera on the left of your address bar that looks like the following screenshot.

  2. You may have muted your audio in the interview session. You can toggle muting your microphone in the interview session. Mouse over your own image, and you will see an icon of a microphone appear in the lower right of your image. If this icon is crossed out, click it to unmute your session. When you are unmuted, the icon looks like the following screenshot.
  3. You may have muted your microphone on your computer. Make sure you turn on your microphone volume on your computer.
  4. The other person may have muted their volume. They should make sure the volume for their headphones or speakers is turned on.

I can't see or hear the other person. What do I do?

There may be several causes of this issue:

  1. If you can't see/hear the other person, the session may not have started yet. If you're the Interviewer, and both you and the job seeker have joined the session, then you will see a "Start Session" button that looks like the following screenshot. Click this button to connect your video and audio connections.
  2. If you can't hear them, make sure the volume on your headphones or speakers is turned on.
  3. The other person may not have enabled their web camera or microphone. Direct them to follow the instructions in the previous question "The other person can't see or hear me. What do I do?" (provide link to previous question)

How do I exit the interview?

After your 30 minute session has completed, you will see a "Leave Interview" button. Just click the button to exit. Your web camera and microphone will shut off automatically when you leave the session. If you need to leave before the end of your session, you can just close the browser tab or navigate away from the interview page.

Depending on your browser, after you click the "Leave Interview" button, you may receive a confirmation message like the image below. Confirm by clicking "Leave this Page."

I accidentally exited the interview early. How do I re-join?

When you exit an interview early, the interview session is still alive, and the timer is still counting. To re-enter the interview session, just re-visit your Dashboard and click on the button to "Join In Progress Interview." The button looks like this:

After you have re-entered the session, you may need to enable your web camera and microphone again.

The video stream or sound is choppy. What do I do?

Choppy sound or video is usually caused by a slow internet connection for either you or the other person. Make sure you're using a good, reliable internet connection. If you're on wifi, make sure you have a strong signal. If you have access to a plugged-in Ethernet connection, use it.
